Oberlin Changes

A project for History 268

by Michael Kish and Marisa Katz

The purpose of this project was to research information on Oberlin statistics for use in Walter Thompson's sixth grade math class at Langston Middle School.

The model for this project is the City Changes unit in the sixth grade curriculum. This unit uses the New Providence Scrapbook, a set of handouts and worksheets that contains facts and figures for a fictional town.

We created our own version of this scrapbook using Oberlin statistics. We divided Oberlin's history into units based on the years when local papers were established. For each unit, we created a "front page" for the newspaper with facts about that era in Oberlin's history. Each era of history also has a chart which can be used for math problems. We were not sure what type of problems would be appropriate for this grade level, but we tried to suggest some possibilities for the sixth grade teachers to use when they complete the project.
