Spanish In The Elementary Schools
about the SITES program. What is SITES?
The “Spanish In The Elementary Schools” (SITES) program, initiated in the fall of 2005, recruits and trains Oberlin College students to teach Spanish at Eastwood and Prospect Elementary Schools. These Spanish instructors meet with the program director (Kim Faber) twice a week through the new course EDUA 010 “Spanish Teaching Practicum”, to cover pedagogical and professional issues related to language teaching, as well as to address any problems and questions that arise.
The SITES program has three main goals:
- To expose all Oberlin elementary-school children to Spanish.
- To support foreign-language teaching in the Oberlin public schools.
- To offer Oberlin College students interested in language teaching an opportunity to develop their teaching skills and work in the community.
Beginning fall 2006, all Oberlin Public School children, grades K–5, now receive 30 minutes of Spanish instruction, twice a week for 20 weeks during the school year. The Spanish classes are taught by Oberlin College students who have been trained, or are simultaneously in training.

College Enriches Public School Science Curriculum
By Betty Gabrielli
December 6, 2004What do you get when you mix Jell-O, gumdrops, jellybeans, and licorice sticks?
Why, a 3-D model of a cell, of course. That is, if you are a sixth grader in Marcia Stewart's life science class at Langston Middle School.
"Hands-on projects are always big hits with sixth graders," says Stewart.
Especially when they can be eaten, which the students did the next day

Poetry Rules in Middle School,
Thanks to Oberlin Partnership
By Betty Gabrielli
June 23, 2004If "poets are people who like to hang around words," as critic John Ciardi once wrote, then seven Oberlin College students found kindred souls while teaching the art and practice of poetry to sixth, seventh, and eighth graders at Oberlin's Langston Middle School this spring.
Proof are the four stunning poetry anthologies produced by the Langston students - Leaving a Mark, Liar Bird, Temporary Relief, and Hatching Poems - and the sense of empowerment gained by the novice teachers, all seniors who graduated with majors in creative writing.

College Students Lead Science Experiments in Local Schools
Text by Charles Nokes - Photographs by Gail BurtonThe first time I walked into Jean Ebosh's classroom at Oberlin's Prospect Elementary School, I was petrified. I had signed on with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Outreach (HHMI) program to help Ebosh lead hands-on science experiments. When I opened the door, her third-graders were running around and yelling. After Ebosh told me that they were collecting materials for a lab exercise on friction, I began to realize what the term hands-on means in an elementary school...

KID CITY
Kids Creating Communities
Photographs by John MemmottKids City, was a joint venture between the Oberlin College Center for Service and Learning (CSL) and third-graders at Prospect Elementary school. Students created model farms, houses, stores, roads, and ponds for a display in the Adam Joseph Lewis Studies Center. Students from Oberlin High School and community leaders assisted the elementary students as they constructed this town.

Taking History
Outside the Classroom
Text and photograph by Michael KishOn a recent afternoon, two Oberlin College students herded six rambunctious sixth-graders around downtown Oberlin. Although the kids were glad to be out of school for a while, laughing as they ran down the sidewalk, the outing had a serious purpose. The College students--Jennifer Lewis, a senior from Washington, D.C., and Camalo Gaskin, a senior from Oakland, California--were leading them on a tour of Oberlin abolitionist landmarks as part of their project for the course Oberlin History as American History.
